Greens welcome Council's rejection of incinerator application

Planning Committee's rejection of application is a victory for Cardiff and sensible waste management.

Cardiff Green Party has tonight welcomed news that Cardiff Council's Planning Committee has rejected an application to build a waste incinerator in Splott.

The application was rejected by 7 votes to 2 with 2 abstentions after being deferred several times by the committee. It is believed that the developer, Viridor will not lodge an appeal to the Welsh Assembly. Cardiff Green Party submitted a response to the Committee's public enquiry, opposing the application earlier this year.

Sam Coates, prospective Green candidate for Cardiff Central said:

"This is a great victory for the people of Cardiff. An Incinerator would have damaged people's health as well as causing more road congestion and contributing to climate change."

He continued: "We would like to thank Friends of the Earth for the fantastic campaigning they have done to bring this issue to the public's attention and convincing councillors that this is a bad idea for everyone. We now need to take the campaign to the Assembly where Viridor will take their appeal and ensure that the Council's decision is upheld."

"The debate that now needs to be had is how we are going to manage the city's waste in decades to come. Cardiff Greens will argue in favour of a zero waste strategy that maximises recycling and environmentally benign ways of dealing with non-recyclable waste, as well as reducing the levels created in the first place"
