Elections 2012

On Thursday 3rd May 2012, all registered voters in Cardiff will be able to vote for their local council representatives. Cardiff Council consists of 75 people, split into many wards. Your ward will have between one and four representatives on the council and so every voter gets as many votes as there are seats in your ward, You can vote for any group of individuals, whether they are all in the same political party or not.

Why is this important?

Cardiff Council has power over many local issues- housing, leisure and sports facilities, waste and recycling, schools, public transport, youth services, parks and local development and much more.

So how do I vote?

You need to make sure that you are registered to vote- often you may be registered without realising. For example all students living in Halls of Residence are automatically registered. To check whether you are registered, contact the council: Cardiff County Council, Electoral Registration Officer electoralservices@cardiff.gov.uk 029 2087 2034

You can then vote through two methods- postal voting, or voting on the day. With postal voting, you will receive a letter with your ballot in advance, so that you can make your decision and send it off in the post in your own time.

Otherwise, you can simply turn up to vote on the day of the election- Thursday 3rd May- between 7am and 10pm. Simply turn up at your local polling station with your polling card or another form of ID.
